Zagrał w filmach, które łącznie zdobyły 40 nominacji do Oskara oraz przyniosły ponad 3 miliardy dolarów zysków na całym świecie. Pierwszym ważnym filmem Cruisa był Taps (1981) w reżyserii Harolda Beckera. W 1983 roku Cruise oczarował publiczność rolą w filmie Ryzykowny interes, za którą otrzymał pierwszą w karierze nominację do Złotego Globu.
